Mossygoat and Flora from Abroad

Greetings from Mossygoat Farm. It is understandable to be a bit curious how we, as wildcrafters, can offer such a wide range of single sourced Wild Wisdom Botanicals. To answer the query, we need to head back over one hundred sixty years. In 1857, a farmer and settler named Abraham Tharp applied for and received a 400-acre land grant. His land grant included the land that is now Mossygoat Farm. Highway 18 is directly north and well within sight of Mossygoat Farm. On the highway, in line with Mossygoat Farm, is a modest truck weigh station. As told with concurrence by multiple references, the truck weigh station is also the approximate site where Abraham Tharp built a log home. Portions of the Tharp land grant were eventually sold and the Foster family purchased this parcel and built a lumber mill right here on the South Yamhill River. Our beautiful home was built in 1930 by the Fosters from local wood milled on site. The mill now is a brick ghost lurking in the trees. The riverbank still has huge moss-covered concrete slabs that were part of the river damming operation.

Mossygoat Farm Wildcrafted History

Today at Mossygoat Farm, evidence of past homesteading includes remnants from the ebb and flow of agriculture and livestock endeavors. The introduced structures are beautifully juxtaposed when surrounded by the array of vigorous native flora. Ancient fruit trees continue to feed the wildlife and bring bounty to our pantry. Gnarled thick rosebushes and fragrant flowers that were likely carried in a wagon by settlers heading west still thrive. For over a century Yamhill River Road was part of the main route to the central coast from both Portland and Salem. Meaning plenty of roadside plants are established here as well. You can also easily stroll right into the deep expansive mountain forest that borders Mossygoat Farm. This foraging heaven is where your Wild Wisdom Botanicals are single source wildcrafted from!

Wild Wisdom Botanicals Wildcrafting

When we purchased Mossygoat Farm both the land and house were unoccupied for two years. What flora was on the land had no human assistance for at least 8 seasons. Yes, we planted a garden and orchard for our own self-sufficiency. Wild Wisdom Botanicals is not affiliated with our personal garden. We are so blessed with the opportunity to caretake these acres of gladsome earth. Aside from our Saffron Decision (it’s an informative blogpost) all of the healing products offered by Wild Wisdom Botanicals are single source flora that were present on our arrival. We are confidently offering our botanicals only sourced from a land tended exclusively by nature. We waited seven years before offering our Wild Wisdom Botanicals making sure that our endeavor will not disrupt the natural balance of what nature provides.

We have a utopia of healing flora at Mossygoat Farm and now you have better perspective in knowing about how Wild Wisdom Botanicals are sourced. For clarification, the term flora is used quite a bit in this blogpost because of the presence of so many beneficial lichens here. A lichen is neither distinctly plant nor fungi, but the result of symbiosis. For further clarification about the flora prior to 1857, listen to the expert voices from Chachalu Museum and Cultural Center.
